What sold at 20th edition Art Basel Miami BEACH 2022 - record Sales reported -

Some notable seven-figure sales.
Twenty years in, Art Basel in Miami Beach—for better or worse—has become institutionalized. According to the fair’s outgoing Global Director Marc Spiegler, the pandemic was a major catalyst for this shift, posing “a real question about equity and inclusion in the art world,” and leading to the ABMB's commitment to including more Black-owned galleries and dealers from the Asian and African continents in 2022.
While ABMB’s 2022 program signaled a newly redoubled commitment to supporting those voices, the proof, in the words of the newly-inducted Art Basel CEO Noah Horowitz, is ultimately in the pudding.

Reviewing the official fair report from the inaugural edition, one will find an emphasis on multimedia art practice, including sculpture, photography, installations, performance, and so much more, rather than painting.
Yet that was not so in 2022: Painting dominated the booths, as it has at art fairs all year.

And while much of it was reflective of the most talented crop of contemporary abstract and figurative painters working today, fairgoers appeared fatigued by the overwhelming repetition of the medium and were hungry for anything different.

Agnes Martin’s 1998 painting Untitled #14, PACE

Within the first few hours of the opening day of the Miami Beach fair on Tuesday, Pace Gallery raked in multiple sales over $1 million. One of those sales involved Agnes Martin’s 1998 painting Untitled #14.
The canvas, featuring Martin’s signature faded stripes against an off-white background, sold for $7 million.

It was not the only high price made for a postwar artist as VIP attendees scavenged for trophy works. Also at Pace’s booth, Andy Warhol’s 1964 painting Flowers sold for $3.8 million.
Pace also said it made sales for works by Beatriz Milhazes, Loie Hollowell, Robert Nava, Fred Wilson, Adrian Ghenie, and Maysha Mohamedi, the last of whom will be the subject of her first solo show at the gallery in 2023. These works all sold for prices between $75,000 and $1 million

In addition to the previously reported sales of Andy Warhol's Flowers (1964) for $3.8 million and Agnes Martin's Untitled #14 (1998) for $7 million, some other notable seven-figure sales include the following: Gladstone Gallery sold a Keith Haring tarp painting, Untitled (1981), for $4.5 million.
White Cube reported strong sales outside of its top seven-figure deals, including a work by Günther Förg for €1.3 million ($1.36 million); a painting by Georg Baselitz for €1.2 million ($1.26 million); a 2022 painting (Every Way I See You) by Tracey Emin for £750,000 ($914,577); and two works by Theaster Gates (Safety Warning from 2022 and Throne, Toward the Close of the Day from 2010) for around $550,000 each (one of which was placed with a prominent institution).
Gladstone Gallery sold a Keith Haring tarp painting, Untitled (1981), for $4.5 million.
White Cube sold a David Hammons piece for $3.8 million to a prominent museum, and several works by Michael Armitage in the range of $3 million–$4 million each.
Jack Shainman Gallery sold Kerry James Marshall’s We Mourn Our Loss #2 (1997) for $2.8 million.

Philip Guston oil painting, Studio in Small Town (1979), Hauser u Wirth

Hauser & Wirth had several major sales: A Philip Guston oil painting, Studio in Small Town (1979), sold for $7 million; George Condo’s painting Love at First Sight (2002) sold for $3 million; and a Mark Bradford mixed-media piece, Conflagration (2022), sold for $2.8 million.

As many galleries noted, Art Basel in Miami Beach is the fair to bring ambitious works that can be placed in museums.
Such works might exceed the limitations of a more domestic-scaled environment due to their size, subject matter, or medium.
Alejandro Jassan, an associate director at Lehmann Maupin, told Artsy that securing institutional placements was a driving force behind the gallery’s curatorial decisions for its booth.
“We decided to bring museum-quality works, so in a way, we are trying to think about how our global programming is connecting to all of these museum moments around the world,” he said.
Gagosian, which brought works by Ashley Bickerton, Amoako Boafo, Jim Shaw, Alexandria Smith, Anna Weyant, and others, reported that 50 of its pieces sold within the fair’s opening hours.

¨Emilio macht das Licht aus¨ by George Baselitz, 2020, Thaddaeus Ropac

The London-based dealer Thaddaeus Ropac sold a 2020 abstract oil painting by George Baselitz for $1.4 million (1.35 million euros). Titled Emilio macht das Licht aus, it depicts a nude figure hidden beneath white and black strokes, and is from a series of works that is loosely influenced by his friendship with the artist Emilio Vedova, who died in 2006. Baseltiz made the painting for a solo exhibition that was presented during the Venice Biennale this year.
Ropac also sold paintings by Alvaro Barrington, Martha Jungwirth, Alex Katz, Robert Longo, and Robert Rauschenberg, all for prices between $55,000 and $700,000.

Reinforcing the fair’s commitment to showcasing exceptional art from the region, nearly two-thirds of this year’s participating galleries had gallery locations in North and South America, with especially strong presence of galleries from the United States, Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina. The show also featured standout presentations by galleries from Canada, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Guatemala, Peru, Puerto Rico, and Uruguay, including newcomers Herlitzka + Faria from Barrio Norte, Paulo Kuczynski from São Paulo, and Rolf Art from Buenos Aires.

In celebration of its 20th anniversary, Art Basel launched a Gift-Giving Campaign with a lead donation to the STEAM + program, whose mission is to bring active artists into the seven public schools of the city of Miami Beach. Founded in 2018, the program engages 5,000 children and teenagers every year and is administered by The Bass Museum of Art, working in conjunction with many other local institutions, including Pérez Art Museum Miami, Miami City Ballet, New World Symphony, The Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU, Young Musicians Unite, and The Wolfsonian-FIU. UBS, Ruinart, La Prairie, Chateau D'Esclans, Valentino, Knight Foundation, and DRIFT are generously supporting this philanthropic campaign. The fundraiser will run until the end of 2022, at which time the total sum collected will be announced.

CEO Art Basel, 2022, Noah Horowitz

‘This year’s fair was particularly exceptional. The quality and ambition of work in the halls has arguably never been higher, sales have been reported across all sectors, and the city has been electric,’ says Noah Horowitz, CEO, Art Basel. ‘Over the last 20 years Greater Miami has firmly become a cultural destination of the highest order, with this week cementing itself as the apex moment in the American cultural calendar. We couldn't be more excited about what the future has in store for us here.’

‘Our 20th edition was not only the largest ever, but also the strongest in terms of the absolute quality of work,’ says Marc Spiegler, the outgoing Global Director of Art Basel. ‘And it had the most diverse range of galleries and artistic voices ever present, making this show remarkably rich in discoveries. We are immensely proud of what has been achieved together with our galleries, partners, and the city's cultural community.’

Galleries exhibiting across all sectors of the fair remarked on their experiences of this milestone edition:

‘We've been participating in Art Basel Miami Beach for 20 years — we haven't missed a year, and every year, new collectors become new friends. It is a cultural crossroads that combines many energies, many colors, creating a lively rainbow.’

Lorenzo Fiaschi, Co-Founder and Director, Galleria Continua (San Gimignano, São Paulo, Beijing, Havana, Les Moulins, Paris, Rome, Dubai)

‘Art Basel Miami Beach is the best fair in the United States. Not only did we sell all the works we brought here, but we kept hanging out with collectors that weren’t interested in leaving the fair anytime soon. They kept coming back every day.’

Daniele Balice, Founder, Balice Hertling (Paris)

‘Over the last 20 years, Art Basel Miami Beach has shown us the incredible impact a city can have on the art world as well as the powerful effect our community can have on a city. The fair has helped transform the art world into a more expansive and experimental place, and we, in turn, have helped Miami grow into the international powerhouse it is today. This year’s fair was incredibly successful for us, impactful for our artists, and exciting for the collectors and art lovers who attended. Our congratulations go out to the Art Basel team, with special thanks to Marc Spiegler for a great conclusion to his tenure and a new start for Noah Horowitz, as he leads the organization into the future.’

Marc Glimcher, CEO and President, Pace Gallery (New York, London, East Hampton, Los Angeles, Palm Beach, Hong Kong, Seoul, Geneva)

‘From the moment the doors opened our booth was flooded with curators, directors, and top collectors from around the world.  The stream never stopped, and each day more and more folks poured into our booth. The vibe was unlike anything I’ve experienced in my 17 years of selling art.’

Anthony Spinello, Founder, Spinello Projects (Miami)

‘A booth devoted to American masters seemed to us the ideal approach to the premier American art fair. And the response has been euphoric. We’ve placed more works on the first preview day than in any previous years in Miami Beach and in major private and institutional collections. Such positive energy at the fair seems a harbinger of great things ahead for the art world in 2023.’

Marc Payot, President, Hauser & Wirth (Hong Kong, Ciutadella de Menorca, Gstaad, St. Moritz, Zurich, London, Somerset, Los Angeles, New York)

‘Berry Campbell was honored to be included for the first time in the 20th anniversary of Art Basel Miami Beach. The Survey section was an ideal way to introduce a solo presentation of works by an overlooked artist like Lynne Drexler. We had a flurry of activity and sold out our booth on the first day. The market continues to be strong for artists that were left behind due to age, race, geography, and gender.’

Christine Berry, Co-owner, Berry Campbell (New York)

‘We have taken part in Art Basel Miami Beach since its inception, and it is always one of our annual highlights at Sean Kelly. This year the first day was remarkable. We have never had more sales in the history of the fair and we could have rehung almost the entire booth after the first day. The appetite and resilience of the market is unparalleled and extraordinarily strong. We sold to people from all over the world.’

Sean Kelly, Owner, Sean Kelly (New York)

‘Art Basel Miami Beach is always an exceptional platform to support our mission of amplifying the voices of marginalized artists, and this year we saw a tremendous level of public interest in the artists we represent. We saw brisk sales and placed more than a dozen pieces, both to international institutions and significant private collections. It’s more important than ever to support works that subvert inequitable social structures, and to give space to masterful aesthetic voices advocating for a more open and equal future. We’re proud to be leading that effort.’

Kavi Gupta, Founder, Kavi Gupta (Chicago)

‘The intensity of the projects we shared sector with in Positions was fantastic, and we feel very proud to have been a part of a group of galleries working with new generations of impactful voices.’

Mau Galguera, Founder and Director, Pequod Co. (Mexico City)

‘Art Basel Miami Beach is special to us who are coming from the African continent, because we get to introduce artists living on the African continent to a diverse group of art collectors. We are glad to be back here and look forward to building a stable audience in Miami for our artists.’

Daudi Karungi, Director, Afriart Gallery (Kampala)

‘This was the gallery's strongest Miami Beach outing to date. The caliber of collectors in attendance was stellar, and we made significant sales to an international crowd as well as a number of collectors with homes in South Florida. We saw strong demand for both historic works and fresh works from emerging artists. Kudos to Art Basel for delivering an elevated experience to exhibitors and visitors alike.’
