35th America's Cup 2015-2017

- Louis Vuitton America's Cup World Series Portsmouth 2016 - 21.-24. July

The America's Cup is the oldest trophy in world sport, and Britain has never won it. The first race was organised by the Royal Yacht Squadron in 1851, the same year that both Reuters and the New York Times were founded. It was a single race around the Isle of Wight, open to yachts of all nations. The prize was a silver Cup that was valued at One Hundred Pounds sterling. The black schooner America won this nascent contest of maritime supremacy, outclassing the rest of the field to be first at the finish line off Cowes. To honour that victory, it was renamed the America's Cup and became a challenge trophy, open to sailing clubs of all nations.

American teams representing the New York Yacht Club successfully defended the Cup against all challenges for 132 years – the longest winning streak in sport – until an Australian team won in 1983. Since then the Cup has become a truly global phenomena, with challenges from all five continents, and held in locations spread around the world – Cowes, New York, Newport RI, Fremantle, San Diego, Auckland, Valencia and San Francisco.

The Louis Vuitton America's Cup World Series
The Louis Vuitton America's Cup World Series is a racing circuit featuring the best sailors in the world, competing on foiling, wing-sailed 45ft catamarans.
The Louis Vuitton America's Cup World Series is the first stage of competition for the 35th America's Cup and began in the summer of 2015, in Portsmouth. The event culminates in the 35th America's Cup Match, presented by Louis Vuitton, in 2017 in Bermuda, where the top challenger will face the defending champions, ORACLE TEAM USA.

The World Series circuit is an early opportunity to put points on the board that carry forward into the next stage of the competition. Overall ranking positions in the Louis Vuitton America's Cup World Series determine the starting points score of the teams in the Louis Vuitton America's Cup Qualifiers in 2017.

The Louis Vuitton America's Cup World Series Portsmouth will welcome two very special visitors on Sunday July 24th, when The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge join spectators to watch the action on the final day of the event.

The Duchess of Cambridge, Royal Patron of 'The 1851 Trust' the official charity of the Louis Vuitton America's Cup World Series Portsmouth, accompanied by The Duke of Cambridge will visit British team Land Rover BAR's base in Portsmouth to see their state of the art testing boats and meet the staff driving the advanced design and technology behind the team. They will then watch the teams from USA, France, New Zealand, Japan, Sweden and the British team compete in three thrilling races on the Solent, alongside the thousands of fans watching from the Race Village.

After racing, they will visit the Race Village where they will meet with all six of the America's Cup teams and children involved with 'The 1851 Trust' which aims to inspire young people through sailing and the marine education initiatives. Finally, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will head to the main stage for the spectacular prize-giving event.

Sir Keith Mills, Chairman of Team Origin Events, the organisers of the event said:

"It is a huge honour for us to once again welcome the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to Portsmouth. I have been fortunate enough to be involved in many sporting events, from the London Olympic Games in 2012 to the Invictus Games, and I never fail to be amazed by the pride and passion that great sporting events can deliver. We are again looking forward to seeing the huge crowds coming to Portsmouth to watch the action and support home team Land Rover BAR"

The prize giving finale rounds off three days of edge of your seat and adrenaline fuelled action on the water with the world's best sailors racing the fastest boats, reaching speeds of 40mph metres away from the spectators on shore.
For British fans this will be the last chance to support Sir Ben Ainslie and Land Rover BAR on home waters before next year's America's Cup in Bermuda. The best place to watch the action is from the ticketed 'Race Village' on Southsea seafront packed with interactive displays and offering close-up views of the racing and the benefit of large screens broadcasting the racing action.
The entertainment is not only on the water with daily aerial displays by the Red Arrows, Red Bull Matadors and The Blades.
