F1 race#8: Pirelli Grand Prix de France 2018 !
Qualifying, 23.06.2018:

Current Championship Leader Sebastian Vettel, Scuderia Ferrari was 3rd quickest, 2nd V. Bottas  and Lewis Hamilton took pole position for the French GP tomorrow !

The Mercedes driver was fastest in all three parts of qualifying, with his final and best lap being a 1m 30.029s.
The writing was already on the wall yesterday and today, after the third free practice session had been a virtual wipe out, because of a thunderstorm that hit the track, the reigning world champion produced his full “Hammer Time” repertoire. He was helped by a car that was in great shape, also boasting an updated power unit.

It was a clean sweep for the Silver Arrows, as Valtteri Bottas will line up alongside his team-mate, thanks to a time that was pretty close to Hamilton’s, a 1m30.147s. It’s the second time this season that Mercedes has locked out the front row, following on from when Hamilton was on pole in Australia.

Only a few drops of rain fell in qualifying, not enough to require the use of wet tyres and championship leader Sebastian Vettel was third quickest with a 1m30.400s, which he set on his first run in Q3, failing to improve on his second.
Alongside him on the grid will be Max Verstappen, (1m30.705s.).

The third row is made up of the rest of the drivers from the three teams that have dominated this early part of the season: Daniel Ricciardo starts fifth, with Kimi Raikkonen next to him after both men endured a less than memorable Saturday afternoon.

The top teams adopted different tyre strategies for the first race stint. Mercedes and Red Bull will be starting on the Supersofts they used as they crossed the line to end Q2, while Ferrari will be on the Ultrasofts.

The Haas team rounded off the top ten, with Kevin Magnussen no doubt satisfied to be ninth. However, for Romain Grosjean, the best of the three French drivers, there must have been mixed feelings, as he was classified tenth but went off track in his first run in Q3, briefly bringing out the red flags.

A week on from winning the Le Mans 24 Hours, Fernando Alonso’s return to France has not been that great so far. McLaren’s Spanish driver didn’t get past Q1 and neither did team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne.
